Dr Frederic Calon is biochemist-pharmacist dedicated to the development of new treatment for neurodegenerative diseases, which affect more that 500,000 Canadians. Dr Calon and his collaborators have contributed to the discovery of a neuroprotective effect of omega-3 fatty acids in animal models of Alzheimer's and Parkinson’s disease. He has published over 75 papers, including in highly-cited journals in the field of neuroscience. His h-index has recently reached 31. Dr Calon was recruited at Université Laval in July 2003 where he gathered significant support from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Alzheimer Society Canada (ASC), the Parkinson Society Canada, the Canadian Foundation for Innovation and other organisms. Dr Calon’s research team currently comprises 1 postdoctoral fellow, 7 graduate students and 2 research professionals. The ultimate goal of his research is to accelerate the transfer of knowledge from basic neuroscience to clinical applications for brain diseases.
