All active clinical studiesResearch on public and environmental health is entirely focused on identifying disease risk and prevention factors and improving public health. Our strength and unique character flow from our deep roots in the professional practice of public health. We specialize in knowledge transfer to practitioners and support for the implementation of effective public health policies. This group includes researchers in a variety of disciplines including medicine, toxicology, psychology, epidemiology, and public health.
The research takes a “population” approach to two main public health issues—environmental health and infectious diseases. Climate change, water, air, and soil quality, and pollutants in food are all examples of funded research in the environmental sphere, while vaccine-preventable infectious diseases and vaccine development are the topics covered by our infectious disease unit. Other topics such as aboriginal health, occupational health, cancer, trauma, and nutrition are also studied. This research group works closely with the Québec Public Health Institute, is home to the CIHR Nasivvik Center for Inuit Health and Changing Environments, and is a partner in ArcticNet, a Network of Centers of Excellence of Canada for studying the impacts of climate change on the Canadian Arctic.
